Enrichment Classes - Winter/spring 2019

These after school enrichment classes coordinated by PTA offer JSE students the opportunity to explore, create, and learn after school with other students across grade levels. Enrichment classes will start in February and go for 5-12 weeks, depending on the class. Detailed information for each class is provided in the attached pages.

1. All Enrichment participants must fill out the PTA waiver at the end of this packet and either drop it off at the Enrichment Table (#3 below) or the PTA Drop Box (#4 below) before participating in class. One waiver per family. 


2. Online registration is offered for some classes, and preferred for those classes. Website info is in the class details in this packet.  Or…

3. Sign up at the Enrichment Sign Ups table set up in front of the school on either
                     Wednesday, January 30, before school (7:45am - 8:30am), or…
                     Friday, February 1, after school (2:30 - 3:15pm)

4. If you can't come to the Sign Up table or register online, place the check and PTA waiver in the PTA drop-box inside the JSE office no later than Friday 2/1. Registering on time helps avoid the need to cancel classes when low enrollment occurs.

1. “All Fired Up” Arts Class
Mondays 2:35 - 3:35pm

Students will get to experience a program where we use a variety of art supplies & techniques to help build their knowledge of art. Techniques taught in this class include Ceramics-Mosaics, Decoupage-Clay, Building, Canvas Painting, Drawing-Mixed Media, Specialty Projects, Fused Glass and more! Educating children on the importance of recycling and reusing is also part of the program. Instructor Becky Mellott will use her 20+ years of teaching experience to guide students through a variety of awesome art projects in which they can explore, create, and have fun.


2. STEM FUNdamentals with LEGO Materials

Mondays 2:40 - 4:10pm

Gear up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as: Houseboats, Mini Golf Courses, Forklifts, and the London Tower Bridge. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment.

3. JSE Homework Club

Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:40 - 3:40pm

Class runs the whole session (2/12-5/16). Sign up for either Tue, Thu, or both (no class 4/2, 4/4, or 4/16)

Grades: 2-5

Cost: $25/class. Checks payable to “Kathryn Fischer”

(Parents may pay for classes up front or in installments before class is attended. Cost for all Tuesdays is $300; cost for all Thursdays is $325; cost for all Tues & Thursdays is $625)

This class offers homework help and tutoring for math, reading, writing, and spelling with emphasis on Common Core and Bridges math. All teachers are experienced teachers and tutors that span all grade levels. Mrs. Stephanie Battles teaches third grade, Mrs. Kathryn Fischer teaches fourth grade, and Ms. Kyleigh Williams teaches fifth grade here at John Swett. Mrs. Sara Churchill is an experienced Martinez educator with a background in special education as well as teaching English learners. All of us are fun-loving, hard-working, compassionate and dedicated teachers that care about our students' success. We may send home a periodic message to the parents to let them know achievements, areas to work on and recommendations for continued help and support at home. All school materials that students should be working on including classwork and/or homework must come with the student every day. Extra material will be provided as additional help if needed. Students must be dedicated to coming to every session they have indicated on their sign-up sheet each week. Sessions are offered every Tuesday, every Thursday, or every Tuesday AND Thursday. There will be no "drop-in" or as-needed sessions. Payment is non-refundable. 


4. Cooking ‘Round the World: A Dish of Disney

Wednesdays 1:35-3:05pm

Grades: 1-5
Cost:  $140/student

Each class session children will cook delicious dishes featured in Disney movies. From “Toy Story” to “Moana” to “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and more, children will taste and be reminded of their favorite films. Class also includes a fun Disney trivia game. Cooking Round the World is a nut free program; there are no nuts in any recipe. If your child has a food allergy beyond nuts, please contact Director Mindy Myers before registering: 510-593-5285.


5. Chess, by Chess Wizards

Join Chess Wizards this school year for challenging chess lessons, exciting tournaments, fun team activities, and more! If you’re brand new to the game, we’ll teach you the basics and get you playing with the big kids in no time. If you’re a seasoned checkmate artist, we’ll show you new ways to let your creativity loose on and off the chess board.


Chess Wizards is one of the largest chess academies in the nation. 6. Are You Ready For: Nothing But Fun? (with Ms. Suzanne Fischer)

This SPRING "Nothing But Fun" will be taking adventurous students on and off campus to have NOTHING BUT FUN!  Each Thursday, we will experience fun activities/interactive presentations on campus or an off-campus local excursion. Some excursions/activities may include: guest presentations, interactive games, glow in the dark dance parties, scavenger hunts, visiting local parks/businesses such as: Nancy Boyd Park, Ian's Yogurt, Contra Costa Cinemas, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) activities, and more! “Nothing But Fun” snacks, and FUN always provided!!!

New to JSE by request from a JSE parent whose child enjoyed making a Trendy Craft! Join Trendy Crafts for “Decorate Your Space” and make an exciting, new craft project each week. “Decorate Your Space” is a perfect match for the new year. Projects include a mixed media canvas featuring our state, a blinged out wish tin, a trendy tissue dot desk organizer, and more.  See also

8. Yoga

Grades 1-5

Cost $150

Room: Cafeteria
Classes include a heart-centered theme, yoga sequences, a spirited fitness routine to music, breath-work, cooperative games and a time for relaxation. Yoga mats will be provided. Students may bring a light snack and a water bottle.
