Wow, it is hard to believe that we are winding down another school year!

Please join me in congratulating the fabulous group of PTA officers elected at our April meeting:

President – Jena Odiorne

Executive VP – Traci Lavino

Treasurer – Vana Tran

Secretary – Carrie Poole

VP, Membership – Hattie von Ranson w/Breann Kvernes

VP, Ways & Means – Sarah Farrar w/Jeff Farrar

VP, Communications – Brett Poole

Auditor – Jessica Lindgren

Financial Secretary – Emily Freedman

Historian – Ashley Russell

Parliamentarian – Ashleigh Leal

They are all enthusiastic and I know they will do a wonderful job leading our PTA!

PTA’s initial 2017-18 Budget was approved at the meeting in May.  And, with new officers and a budget, PTA is ready to start the next school year!

A huge thank you to Casey Stratmeyer and Ashleigh Leal and the many volunteers who helped with Teacher Appreciation Week.  It was especially fun to see all of the creative door designs.  I heard that Jessica Lindgren, Theresa Grellman, and Jennifer Hanson went above and beyond taking on several doors and/or working late into Sunday ensuring that all staff had a beautiful door to welcome them on Monday morning.

Although I missed it, I heard the Father-Daughter Dance was a fun time for all!  Thank you to Jena Odiorne and all the volunteers who made it happen!

May is another busy month with the Fun Run on May 17th (thank you Hattie von Ranson!), Golf Tournament on May 19th (thank you Rebecca and Shawn St. Germain!) and Mother-Son Bowling on May 21st (thank you Kathy Kushner and Deanna Cerri!)

Please continue to support our Round Table Dining Out nights.  Round Table, on Center Avenue, donates back 15% of their sales directly to our PTA.  The date for June is Wednesday, 6/7/17.

As I wind down my term as president, I would like to thank all of the outgoing PTA officers for the hard work you have all put in during your term on the PTA Board!  I couldn’t have done it without you!  Casey Stratmeyer, Traci Lavino, and Principal Cannon have particularly been by my side – meeting up every Friday and providing advice and assistance with leading the PTA.  Finally, the entire JSE community has been very supportive.  I am so grateful to all of you!

What a totally awesome time we had at the Fast Times at John Swett Elementary Auction/Dinner/Dance!  The final accounting is underway – however, I am certain we made a considerable amount for our students.  Thank you so much to the Auction Co-Chairs Sarah Farrar and Leah O’Callaghan and the many additional volunteers that made it all possible!  This is our largest fundraiser and while we have many helpers for next year, we are still looking for that person (or team) to take on the event as the Chair.

Have you seen our cleaned up campus?  It looks beautiful!  Thank you to all of the volunteers and especially to Alicia Jensen for organizing it all!

The Book Fair was another huge success.  Thank you to Laura Yasul and Carolyn and Al Schulze for their dedication to making this happen!  This was Laura’s last year with her son moving on to the junior high next year.  So, we are looking for someone interested in running this event next year.  The kids always love it.

In case you missed the last PTA meeting, our school Librarian, Brandi Copeland, presented many needs for the library.  PTA membership was impressed with her ideas and approved $3,000 for library upgrades.  We also approved purchasing tablets for PTA use at events and heard the report of nominations for next years’ PTA officers.  We will vote on the nominations at our April meeting.

On April 28th, the Father-Daughter Dance will take place at JSE! Get out your dancing shoes!

We will again be selling Jamba Juice buy-one-get-one-free cards starting after Spring Break.

Please continue to support our Round Table Dining Out nights.  Round Table, on Center Avenue, donates back 15% of their sales directly to our PTA.  The date for April is Wednesday, 4/12/17.

Upcoming PTA Events:

April 11th 7:00PM  PTA Meeting (Elections)

April 12th  Round Table Fundraiser

April 28th  Father-Daughter Dance

 Happy Spring!

The sun is finally shining and it looks like it will be nice weather for Campus Cleanup Day on March 4th 9:00AM – Noon.  Join us to beautify the school, have fun, and make new friends while helping with the annual spring clean-up.  This year's to-do list includes repainting some playground lines, refreshing a bathroom, pulling weeds, and other landscape work.  We need volunteers!  Bring gloves and yard tools!  Bring the kids!   Bring friends!  Coffee and light refreshments will be served. This is a great way to join together as a community and spruce up the school.

The Book Fair is always a kid-favorite event and will be held during the week of March 13th – 17th.  This is a great time for the kids to be excited about picking out books they want to read.

Missoula was a fabulous success!  The Friday night show sold out and was standing room only.  Thank you to Heather Keyser and Jessica Handley for their dedication and hard work on this wonderful event!

In February, PTA helped sponsor the 4th Graders’ 3-day, 2-night trip to the Coloma Outdoor Discovery School. Lots of hands-on learning took place and we hope to make it a JSE tradition.

Please support our Round Table Dining Out nights.  Round Table, on Center Avenue, donates back 15% of their sales directly to our PTA.  The date for March is Wednesday, 3/8/17.

 Happy Half Year!

It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through the school year!  I hope it is going well for you and your students!

It was great to see so many of you at the Lunar New Year event!  It was a wonderful way for many of us to be exposed to a different culture.  The kids had a fun time feeding the lions to bring good luck!  Thank you to Vana Tran for putting it all on!

Missoula is busy rehearsing this week with performances happening on Friday (2/3) and Saturday (2/4).  This is another enjoyable event to see many JSE students showing off their talents.  Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased through our webstore at jsepta.myschoolcentral.com.

PTA is also sponsoring Campus Cleanup Day on March 4th.  (We are considering adding a second day to accommodate families with conflicting sports schedules – watch for more information.)  The special projects this year are re-painting some of the blacktop play areas, a refresh to teachers’ bathroom, and general pruning, weeding, and tending to the native plants we are nursing in the back of the school. This is a great way to join together as a community and spruce up the school.

WE NEED YOU!  The PTA Nominating Committee is at work recruiting to fill positions on the PTA Board plus many committees. If you are interested, please attend our PTA meetings, send me an email, or say “yes” when you are asked to help.

A huge THANK YOU to MEF for their generous support of JSE this year! JSE teachers and staff were awarded ten grants totaling almost $22,000!  Grants were awarded for a variety of items including: math software, science kits, books, document cameras, Hokki stools, computers, and art supplies.  MEF awarded almost $146,000 between the seven Martinez schools.  PTA appreciates the support of MEF!

Please support our Round Table Dining Out nights.  Round Table, on Center Avenue, donates back 15% of their sales directly to our PTA.  The date for February is Wednesday, 2/8/17.

Happy New Year!  I hope you all enjoyed the holidays with friends and family!  Hopefully part of this was seeing the wonderful talent shown by our JSE students at the Talent Show in December.  Thank you so much to Marisa Davis for her continued devotion to this event!  JSE families also demonstrated their creativity building gingerbread houses on a fun-filled night together.  Thank you to Alicia Bailey and Casey Stratmeyer for coordinating this always popular event!

PTA also sponsored the fabulous in-class Walk Through California program for 4th graders. Walk Through Revolution will be presented in January for 5th graders.  Be sure to ask your students about these fun educational programs that PTA provides.

January has more family oriented events that we know you will enjoy!

*New this Year* On January 25th at 6:00PM join us for a Lunar New Year Celebration including Lion Dancers and other cultural activities.

Missoula week begins with auditions on Monday, January 30th, and ends with performances on Friday (2/3) and Saturday (2/4).  Missoula is a PTA sponsored event that provides a great opportunity for our JSE students to participate in theater.

WE NEED YOU!

PTA rules allow a person to fill a position on the Executive Board for only two consecutive years.  At the end of this year (June 30th), many of our PTA volunteers will be reaching the end of their terms.  There are many exciting opportunities to volunteer.  Opportunities range from small commitments that can be done on your own schedule to coordination of large events.  If you are interested, please attend our PTA meetings, send me an email, or say “yes” when you are asked to help.

By being involved in PTA:

  • You show your children that school matters, and that you are invested in their success.
  • You demonstrate to your child that success in school is the pathway to college, a career and a productive life!
  • You partner with the principal, teachers, and staff to make your child's school safe, welcoming, a hub of learning, and a fun place to be.
  • You share in campus events and experiences that make your child’s school days more memorable!
